Cruise vacations are a wonderful opportunity to unwind and relax in some of the world’s most beautiful locations. It’s easy to miss out on the most interesting information and features when there’s so much to learn before you set sail on the Disney Cruise Line.
Even if you think you know everything there is to know about the ships and activities on board, you could still return to port unaware of hidden sundecks, unannounced character greetings, and Mickey-shaped delicacies. Thankfully, we’ve compiled a list of Disney Cruise Alaska tips to help make your next family vacation even more spectacular.
TIP1
The Disney Wonder is the company’s second-oldest ship, having been launched in 1999. When Disney Cruise Line first began, it exclusively traveled from Florida to destinations in the Bahamas and Caribbean.
As a result, the Wonder was built to travel in tropical regions. The Disney Wonder received a comprehensive top-to-bottom restoration last year, although the majority of the improvements were to the interior spaces and cruise passenger programming/activities.
The AquaLab, a new interactive play area, was added last year, although it, like all the pools, hot tubs, and water play spaces on Disney ships, is open to the elements.
While navigating the cooler northern seas, there’s a good possibility you won’t be playing in the pool or splash pad sections. Temperatures may not rise above the low 60s depending on the time of year you visit (15 to 17C).
TIP2
What is the most important thing I would tell somebody planning an Alaska cruise? Binoculars. They’re excellent. Binoculars that are light and portable, so you may take them on your expeditions are preferred.
This Disney cruise will take you to see a lot of wildlife and beautiful scenery. Prepare to be astonished by a plethora of fascinating sights that you will want to investigate more. Bring out the binoculars.
On an Alaskan trip, high-quality binoculars will be your closest buddy, and all those passengers who aren’t “in the know” to carry them will be envious. Binoculars are a must-have accessory.
TIP3
Before you go to dinner, order cookies and milk from room service, and they will be delivered as soon as you return to your room. This was a wonderful little treat that was free unless you wanted to tip the waitress.
Room service is generally free, so if you’re leaving early for a port adventure, just leave an order tag on the door the night before and they’ll bring it to you whenever you need it. On a handful of times, this came in handy.
TIP4
Meridian is the spot to be on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. On the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, Meridian is the place to be.
The upmarket bar and lounge area are designed for diners at the fee-based Palo and Remy restaurants, but it is open to all adults who follow the business casual dress requirement. Meridian, noted for its martinis also has a cigar bar, handmade craft drinks, and a gin and tonic cart, as well as a private balcony with a picture-perfect view of the nightly sunsets.
TIP5
From May to September, when the Disney Wonder sails to Alaska, the temperature in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) is pretty steady.
However, once you’re in Alaska, the weather can quickly change from pleasant to bitterly cold. Rather than carrying a bulky jacket, it’s a good idea to bring a variety of layers to best prepare for the ever-changing temps. You should be able to throw on a sweatshirt or hat as needed, and then shed layers when the weather warms up.
The day in Tracy Arm is almost always the coldest, and you’ll be out on deck for the majority of it. Disney does its best to assist you by supplying hot cocoa and blankets, but you must also plan when packing.
You should also be prepared for rain, as it may fall on at least one day of your voyage.
During our Disney cruise, it rained three out of seven days. One day there was a heavy downpour and the other two there was a drizzle.
There were days when a t-shirt and a light jacket were enough (Ketchikan) and others when we needed heavy sweaters underneath our jackets (Juneau).
When on an Alaskan cruise, we recommend wearing closed-toed running shoes or hiking shoes. You will need them not only after you arrive at port, but also because the deck might become rather slippery if it rains while your ship is sailing to Alaska.
Don’t forget to pack sunscreen too! When the sun shines brightly in Alaska, UV radiation can be intense.
